FreeCelebrate the 287th founding of Ft Frederica on Saturday, March 18th!
St. Simons Island, GA: The National Park Service at Fort Frederica National Monument is pleased to announce the details of the 2023 Fort Frederica Colonial Days Festival, which occurs on March 18, 2022. This annual event commemorates the founding of Frederica in 1736 and provides a wonderful opportunity for Frederica’s visitors to actively participate in the history of the site and of colonial Georgia. Admission is free. The festival begins at 10 AM and concludes at 3:00 PM.
“Colonial Days are a fun and interactive glimpse of our past and the rich history surrounding us. I always enjoy this festival at the Fort,” says Superintendent Gary Ingram.
Activities throughout the day will immerse visitors into the history of Frederica and the struggle for empire between Great Britain and Spain in the 18th Century. Volunteers throughout the region will help the National Park Service bring this history to life. Soldiers from Ft. Frederica’s volunteer regiment will portray the 42nd Regiment of Foot and explain their role in determining the future of the Colony of Georgia with musket and cannon firing demonstrations. The Highland Independent Company of Darien will bring to life the history of the Scottish Highlanders stationed in Georgia in the 1730’s and 1740’s.
Living Historians will also demonstrate the daily life of the colonists who lived here at Fort Frederica with demonstrations of blacksmithing, canoe making, and textile production. Also, be sure to glimpse colonial family life by participating in some colonial children’s games and colonial cricket!
