Moving can be incredibly stressful, especially when kids are involved. If you’re moving to coastal Georgia and the Golden Isles for FLETC, you have several housing options depending on how long you’ll be here and what kind of commute you prefer. Below is a breakdown of the most popular areas where FLETC families live.
Living in Brunswick would give you the shortest commute to FLETC. Many FLETC families live in the northern part of Brunswick, off Harry Driggers Blvd. North Brunswick has several new neighborhoods, a highly rated elementary school (Greer Elementary), and would give you quick access to the north gate of FLETC. This is great if you want to get to and from work quickly or live close enough to drive home for lunch.
After Brunswick, this is where many FLETC families choose to live. There’s a ton to do for kids, you’re close to the beach, and you’ll live that small-town island lifestyle. Note that housing costs are much higher on St. Simons Island, and you’ll have to commute over the causeway to get to FLETC. This isn’t a huge deal unless there’s an accident but expect it to take 30-40 minutes to get to FLETC, depending on the time of day and time of year.
These cities are located south of Brunswick off of I-95. Kingsland is about 37 miles south of Brunswick, while St. Marys is about 43 miles south of Brunswick. While not super popular options for FLETC employees, they are options. Since FLETC is right off of 95, we’ve been told the commute isn’t too bad and can take about 45 minutes on a good day. Housing would be more affordable here, getting you close to the Florida/Georgia state line and close to Jacksonville, FL.
Richmond Hill is located about 57 miles north of Brunswick, off of I-95. Again, not a super popular option for FLETC housing, but we have heard of people living there and commuting to FLETC. Housing would be more affordable with lots of new builds and gets you close to Savannah, GA, and I-16.
Several companies specialize in housing rentals for those working temporarily at FLETC. They’re typically flexible with moving dates and rent duration, and most will also come fully furnished. The rental companies that cater to FLETC employees will rent their properties for the per diem rate set by the Federal Government.
You can look outside of these companies at other rental options. Many vacation rentals on St. Simons and Jekyll Islands would get you close to the beach so you could turn your TDY assignment into a part-time beach vacation. We know several people brought their kids with them on their TDY assignments during the summer months, and their kids didn’t want to leave.
If you’re here with FLETC permanently or on a 3-5 year term, you can rent or buy. Many realtors in the area have tons of experience working with FLETC families and would be happy to help.
